GOOD MORNING!
Please try and ignore whatever it is that you just heard. It should only last for up to a minute... maybe.
It... it is morning, right?
There are no windows.
There's a light, but it's barely considered one. The compound runs on a solar generator, but that doesn't mean it has a lot of power. The light seems to be hanging from the ceiling, swinging precariously. That's when you might actually start to wake up, sit up, find the things that are familiar to you... and then some of the things that aren't. It'd be wise to explore the small room you're in before leaving through the steel door, but there's nobody around to tell you that.
Outside is a tightly knit compound, just as dark and metallic as the room. The hallway you're in houses dozens more doors identical to yours, and if you're unlucky there may be more people poking their heads out through them, just like you. There's a dull glowing sign that reads MEDICAL BAY but not all of you remember being hurt. Some of you may be just fine, apart from the memory of the sound you heard when waking up.
The Medical Bay is stocked with enough medicine to last a couple of months. There's almost everything that can be found in a hospital. Somebody was thinking ahead.
Outside of the Medical Bay are more doors, some are even locked—many aren't. There are living quarters, a food storage, a kitchen, some laboratories; even a room full of computers and nothing else, all with a screen asking for a password. There's only two doors out of the compound, a vehicle bay with what appear to be a few military jeeps and trucks, and the front doors. It's on the inside of the front doors that something is painted in bright red, flecked with what smell like blood:
DO NOT GO OUTSIDE WITHOUT A GUN AND WATER.
GUNSHOTS ATTRACT THEM.
HOLLOWS IS 1.3 MILES NORTH OF HERE.
GOOD LUCK.
And on the outside of the doors, if you choose to open them:
THE WORLD ENDED JULY 3RD, 2015.
Now... how long ago was that? And where is this place? Luckily for you, Hollows is a small town that can be raided. It hasn't been too long since the apocalypse—surely you'll be able to find something there. Batteries, food, weapons, maybe some people—and what you're guaranteed to find. Them, whatever that means.
Outside of the compound there's a fence with a single gate. Nothing can get past this unless you let them in for tea, so be careful. There's a shooting range and a large shed full of weapons and ammo, enough to last two months if you're careful. Guns, knives, anything that would be used by the military and police is hidden away in the shed. There are even a few hunting bows with arrows.
If you climb up the ladder to the top of the wall, there's enough room to walk along the top. There's definitely something moving in the distance, something you should definitely be worrying about. Maybe it's time to get a good look with a sniper rifle...?
Oh.
It's gone.
Maybe it was just a trick of the light. Regardless, it's impossible for everyone to stay in the compound forever. There are nefarious things at work! The choices are to go to Hollows, stick around, or go somewhere else. Really, the world is almost a blank slate. Maybe more of a used slate, but still yours to explore.
When the night comes, you should be hiding. The screamers, the ragers, whatever the hell they are, are running full tilt through the streets and across the landscape, running through anything in their way, ripping apart anything alive. If you don't make any noise, they won't notice you. Especially since they're stuck listening to each other. But if you get noticed by one, it won't be long until a horde forms... you might be able to outrun one for awhile, but they don't seem to let up on their breakneck pace. Maybe someone should have told you how to kill them.

OOC NOTES.
There will be zombies in Hollows. Whether you meet them on the way there is up to you. Apart from the undead and the animals (maybe somebody should let those poor creatures out of their houses) the town is completely deserted. In fact, the closest thing you can find to a human are the bodies of those who died without being bitten, and there's even few of those. You can find anything you'd find in a normal town here, and are free to loot and raid the houses and stores—the cops won't be coming, after all. The power is OFF apart from what you can find that is solar powered or still has a charge. If you're lucky and find another town while exploring the first few weeks, you might find an area that still has power—thank hydroelectricity.
Just keep in mind travel time... and travel expenses.
You have creative freedom over everything else. The world is open. The only stationary places are landmarks and cities—if you want to go to Texas and talk to the poor astronauts stranded up in space, it's there. (Might be a long trip, though...)
If your character can figure it out by geography before getting to Hollows, the compound is located a few hours from the west coast, in California.
The way to kill a zombie is blunt force to the head. The head doesn't need to be removed, but significant damage needs to be done to it. This does not include the throat—it needs to be a headshot.
There's also a glaring hint. The computers in the compound, asking for a password. It is impossible to hack at this time. There will be more on this later!
Finally, if your character is exploring outside of the compound (or extensively inside of it) there's a comment here for linking me the thread. You can also PM me! I'll be ducking in with what your character may or may not have found, via a response to the actual RP thread.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS please direct them here!

God, for one moment, he's startled and grateful for the crash of something familiar. That belligerent, stupid Northern prick, or else he's really going mad, reaching.
He's quiet as he turns and doubles back down the hall. It's worth the look, he supposes, before he tries to go outside.
Lo and behold.
"How original, threatening the problem until it's gone away. What if there's no teeth to knock?"
It's a lame opening, but Grayson's honestly at a bit of a loss. He's actually somewhat happy to see the great big bastard, even if he looks nothing short of unimpressed, thin arms arms perched on slender hips, one of them making a fist around the handle of a first aid kit.

Really, it shouldn't have been a shock. They lived together. Grayson was easily the most irritating and obnoxious of the Big Brother housemates and always getting on Marky's last nerve. Grayson acted like a diva in front of the camera, but he knew the truth. Grayson was just a silly, skinny queen who only talked behind Marky's back so he could get a better view of his arse.
"...Grayson?" His jaw drops and his eyes grow large and round with surprise.
It shouldn't have been a shock, but it was, because somewhere deep down Marky knew the reality of the situation. That it wasn't all just a nightmare he could wake up from. Grayson was dead, and Marky was dead and everyone they knew was dead.
"S-Stop takin' the piss-" His voice breaks and his face crumples, and suddenly he's lunging towards the other man. Grayson might shit himself thinking this was the time Marky finally snaps and beats his head in, but rather than wailing down blows his thick arms wrap around Grayson in an uncomfortably tight embrace.
"Ididna'wanttocutyouup, noneofusdid!" That Northern prick brogue is especially unintelligible now that he's blubbering.

No, not a moth. Not a moth at all.
Marky's sudden movement jolts him out of his thoughts and even his surprise at being called by his actual name. It's instinctive he tries to backpedal from the great wall of meat the comes flying at him. If not for the embrace of those hard arms, Grayson would have probably fallen right on his boney arse.
"Jesus, Marky, what--"
He's just a little boy, isn't he? A giant, homophobic little boy.
And Grayson's not wholly sure what he's feeling right now. Confusion, disdain, worry, relief... and plenty more. What he does is lift his free hand and pat between the other's shoulder blades, rubbing his back a little before shaping his hand around Marky's shoulder from the back. There there.
"There now, alright... You're hurting me."

Except there's no one left to tell him, and the monsters are real.
"Where's 'Ronica? Last I saw she went down beside me, couldn't get them offa' her-" His breath hitches in his chest, "They got inside the house and we didna' stand a chance, it was that Patrick that did it, and fucking Joplin! If you see 'im tell 'im he's done- I'm gonna murder that bastard!"
no subject
"Easy - I can't understand you when you go off like that." He seems a bit irritated, but it's also just his confusion working him over. They got inside the house, that's as much as he can work out, and Patrick and Joplin and something about murdering someone?
"You're the first person I've seen from the house. There's some other people, but I don't recognize them." He folds his arms. Inhales through his nose. "Do you want to talk about it now, or go look for them?"

Life is taking the piss, and Marky doesn't like being pissed on. He's usually standing at the other end of the stream.
"I dunno, I dunno! What am I s'posed to do? Nothin' seems ta' make a difference, we're all dead anyways!" He stomps his foot and breathes hard through his nose, like a bull.
"An' if we is alive somehow, how am I t'protect meself and you without a gun!" He rounds on his heel and into the small room whence he came, kicking at whatever was nearest: a locker which dents easily beneath the toe of his trainer. The door pops open to reveal some stuff, of which he's too riled to notice.
no subject
Yeah, he's just going to stand there and see if the storm doesn't blow over, and think... Are they dead? It doesn't feel like it.
He's trying very hard to keep a level head right now, but the more he thinks about it, the harder it becomes. He looks unsure of himself now, eyes cast off to the side and arms wrapped tightly around his thin body.

Like all bullies, Marky is a coward at heart. Or had been. The end of the world had changed everyone.
When he looks at Grayson, already scared and upset, it's like he's been slapped upside the head. He doesn't need to do anything to make himself feel bigger. He is bigger. There's only the two of them now, and of the two he's the strong one. Grayson has his smarts, but Marky has his fists and his heft and they'll need both if they want to make it through.
His hands, which he hadn't even noticed were raised, drop uselessly back to his sides.
"Eh- I'm just mad 'cuz I'm confused. What're we gonna do?" His eyes are beginning to tear up again, but he's trying to wear a brave face even as his thick lower lip trembles.
"If we's here and the rest somewhere else, they're prolly just as confused as us. We gotta find 'em, ain't no good split apart... But if we don't even know where here's at, where do we start?" Critical thinking wasn't Marky's strong suit, but he was giving it a solid effort for Grayson's benefit.
no subject
He is pleasantly surprised when Marky seems to rein himself back in, and surprisingly empathetic when he sees the other well up with tears. Suddenly, there's a lump in his throat.
"I dunno," His voice sounds strained, down to a whisper. "I haven't had a chance to look around much, but someone's put a sign on the door - well I guess it's an exit - anyway it says not to go out without a gun. So if the rest are here, then..."
A thought strikes him.
"Then we're all... dead." He recalls Marky saying that earlier, and now it's finally hitting him. "All of us?"
Before Marky can answer, he's taking a shaky inhale and walking past the other, further into the room, towards the corner. Back turned to the other, he shakes his head. Now he's crying, uncurling his arms to try to wipe his eyes and cover his mouth.
"I'm still waiting for the punchline, or to wake up. I'd-- I'd really like to wake up now."
Until he'd seen Marky, it wasn't real. And everything Marky kept saying made it more and more the truth. Grayson knew how to be rational when the chips were down, but right now he feels insane. All of it does.
