”We should go outside, find an open space so I can take off”

Ellie doesn’t weight much to a Kryptonian, but he has only been flying for a couple months. It’s better not to risk it- he still causes wind currents when he takes off and everyone is already enough on edge as it is. Ellie is already on edge as it is, and this might just be Kal’s imagination but he’s still pretty sure she doesn’t really feel comfortable around all of his powers.

So it’s probably better to play it safe.

“Got anything you need?”

"Always do."

She settles her backpack on her shoulders, squinting at him and then their surroundings. "So do you run really fast or teleport or what?"

"Neither. I fly."

He gives her a glance. "Which means we'll have to figure out the most comfortable way for you to fly with me. Maybe on my back...?"

"You fly. Of course you do." Deep breath, hard exhale. "Well, let's do this."

She pulls on the tint-lensed goggles she found when she was poking around with Black Bolt - she hadn't kept them then, but it seemed like a good idea to grab something if she planned on high-speed travel. "You gonna boost me up or squat or what?"

Under her breath, she adds, "Not like I needed to look cool anyway."

Clark pretends not to hear and just crouches down in front of her, looking back to nod at her.

“Ready when you are.”

She climbs aboard with a quiet "hup", arms wrapped tight around his shoulders and legs around his waist. Her heart is starting to pound a little. She's going to fly.

"Ready, I guess."

It’s easy to tell she’s nervous, the quick thum thum thum sound of her heartbeat very loud and clear to his ears. He’d suggest he go on his own if it makes her nervous, but she has already insisted on coming and it’s obviously important to her. So he decides it’s better to take it easy.

So he lifts himself a couple inches of the ground..

“Doing okay?”

"Holy fuh..." She tightens her grip, briefly, at the shock of seeing him actually levitate. "Um. Yeah, I'm good."

“Okay then.”

And so he keeps on going, one inch at a time until they are high up enough to fly without risking any structural damage to nearby buildings. “I'm going to go fast now. If you need me to slow down and can't talk tap me three times on the back, okay?”
