Well, actually it's not. It's raining—hard. Is it supposed to be? Who knows. But there's a thunderstorm rolling in, and zombies aren't immune to being struck by lightning.

Really, though—there's nothing entirely extraordinary about tonight. It's what you choose to make of it.

[ jim finishes writing what he's counting down before stopping and looking back toward roger. he offers a half-laugh, and shakes his head. ]

I wasn't, but I guess I could if they need somebody to cook around here. [ he remembers the lessons his aunt taught him when he was a kid. you aren't going to have one of those fancy synthesizers all the time. ]

I was trying to get a good list of all the supplies we have here. Not sure how things are on the outside, but we might have to consider rationing while we find a more sustainable option. Crops---something.

[ anything, really. he can also help with that. ]

[disappointments]

[ roger relaxes a little at what feels like a warm enough reception, moving further into the room to claim a chair. he turns it backward to sit in it and folds his arms across the back. ]

Should probably assume it's worse out there than it is in here. Anything else and you run the risk of being disappointed, in a context where 'disappointed' probably means 'dead.'

[ self-reliance is nothing new to roger, but group self-reliance is foreign. in his experience, when you start looking out for other people, you're putting yourself at risk. ]

[ jim can't help a short chuckle that falls a little flat at his definition of disappointed. because the joke's on you, he guesses. jim has already been there done that with the whole dead thing. not that it is a thing he plans on breaking to anybody around here.

especially considering the nature of the creatures they are up against. ]

Well, I mean, outside of the giant awful monster and the things trying to break down doors to bite us---I've had worse.

[ he's definitely had worse. ]

[ jim runs a ship with a crew complement in the high hundreds. he's used to group scenarios and even the few people who think that they aren't made for that kind of thing. there are outliers even in starfleet. it takes all kinds, especially in space. in the end, everyone pulls together. he's seen that more than once. ]

[disappointments]

[ 'i've had worse' wrings a wry grin from roger. he wouldn't say he's had worse, per se — the shit roger's survived was altogether different from this. no comparison, really. ]

Probably just gonna call you 'trident guy' unless someone specifically asks me your name. [ after a brief contemplation: ] Or unless I can make a joke out of it.
