( OPEN ) GAME START.

▶ WHO: Everyone.
▶ DATE: July 9th, 2015 (Day 1)
▶ WARNINGS: Blood, violence, general zombie horror.
▶ SUMMARY: You've met with a bad... however that line goes. Welcome to Earth.

GOOD MORNING!

Please try and ignore whatever it is that you just heard. It should only last for up to a minute... maybe.

It... it is morning, right?

There are no windows.

There's a light, but it's barely considered one. The compound runs on a solar generator, but that doesn't mean it has a lot of power. The light seems to be hanging from the ceiling, swinging precariously. That's when you might actually start to wake up, sit up, find the things that are familiar to you... and then some of the things that aren't. It'd be wise to explore the small room you're in before leaving through the steel door, but there's nobody around to tell you that.

Outside is a tightly knit compound, just as dark and metallic as the room. The hallway you're in houses dozens more doors identical to yours, and if you're unlucky there may be more people poking their heads out through them, just like you. There's a dull glowing sign that reads MEDICAL BAY but not all of you remember being hurt. Some of you may be just fine, apart from the memory of the sound you heard when waking up.

The Medical Bay is stocked with enough medicine to last a couple of months. There's almost everything that can be found in a hospital. Somebody was thinking ahead.

Outside of the Medical Bay are more doors, some are even locked—many aren't. There are living quarters, a food storage, a kitchen, some laboratories; even a room full of computers and nothing else, all with a screen asking for a password. There's only two doors out of the compound, a vehicle bay with what appear to be a few military jeeps and trucks, and the front doors. It's on the inside of the front doors that something is painted in bright red, flecked with what smell like blood:

DO NOT GO OUTSIDE WITHOUT A GUN AND WATER.
GUNSHOTS ATTRACT THEM.
HOLLOWS IS 1.3 MILES NORTH OF HERE.
GOOD LUCK.

And on the outside of the doors, if you choose to open them:

THE WORLD ENDED JULY 3RD, 2015.

Now... how long ago was that? And where is this place? Luckily for you, Hollows is a small town that can be raided. It hasn't been too long since the apocalypse—surely you'll be able to find something there. Batteries, food, weapons, maybe some people—and what you're guaranteed to find. Them, whatever that means.

Outside of the compound there's a fence with a single gate. Nothing can get past this unless you let them in for tea, so be careful. There's a shooting range and a large shed full of weapons and ammo, enough to last two months if you're careful. Guns, knives, anything that would be used by the military and police is hidden away in the shed. There are even a few hunting bows with arrows.

If you climb up the ladder to the top of the wall, there's enough room to walk along the top. There's definitely something moving in the distance, something you should definitely be worrying about. Maybe it's time to get a good look with a sniper rifle...?

Oh.

It's gone.

Maybe it was just a trick of the light. Regardless, it's impossible for everyone to stay in the compound forever. There are nefarious things at work! The choices are to go to Hollows, stick around, or go somewhere else. Really, the world is almost a blank slate. Maybe more of a used slate, but still yours to explore.

When the night comes, you should be hiding. The screamers, the ragers, whatever the hell they are, are running full tilt through the streets and across the landscape, running through anything in their way, ripping apart anything alive. If you don't make any noise, they won't notice you. Especially since they're stuck listening to each other. But if you get noticed by one, it won't be long until a horde forms... you might be able to outrun one for awhile, but they don't seem to let up on their breakneck pace. Maybe someone should have told you how to kill them.

OOC NOTES.

There will be zombies in Hollows. Whether you meet them on the way there is up to you. Apart from the undead and the animals (maybe somebody should let those poor creatures out of their houses) the town is completely deserted. In fact, the closest thing you can find to a human are the bodies of those who died without being bitten, and there's even few of those. You can find anything you'd find in a normal town here, and are free to loot and raid the houses and stores—the cops won't be coming, after all. The power is OFF apart from what you can find that is solar powered or still has a charge. If you're lucky and find another town while exploring the first few weeks, you might find an area that still has power—thank hydroelectricity.

Just keep in mind travel time... and travel expenses.

You have creative freedom over everything else. The world is open. The only stationary places are landmarks and cities—if you want to go to Texas and talk to the poor astronauts stranded up in space, it's there. (Might be a long trip, though...)

If your character can figure it out by geography before getting to Hollows, the compound is located a few hours from the west coast, in California.

The way to kill a zombie is blunt force to the head. The head doesn't need to be removed, but significant damage needs to be done to it. This does not include the throat—it needs to be a headshot.

There's also a glaring hint. The computers in the compound, asking for a password. It is impossible to hack at this time. There will be more on this later!

Finally, if your character is exploring outside of the compound (or extensively inside of it) there's a comment here for linking me the thread. You can also PM me! I'll be ducking in with what your character may or may not have found, via a response to the actual RP thread.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS please direct them here!

[ there's another moment or two of silence, thomas's mind working and blocking out most everything else, before he glances over to john again, frowning like there's something completely off about him. like he's telling him the sky is purple and dolphins ride bicycles. ]

The sun flares. They hit Earth around 2217, not 2015. [ a beat, and he adds on in a rhythmic sort of rush, like he's reciting something tedious, heard a million times. ] Then the virus got out, then everything went to hell.

[ now that his head's a little clearer, walking through the compound, the equipment in the labs did look dated from what he'd seen in the WICKED facilities. what would be the point of setting something up like that, though? it hardly helps the believable factor of any of it. turning around, he starts to survey the area - flat, vegatation, dry but still there. climate pretty normal, sky... looking like the sky. not that that can't be faked, like the massive screen in the maze they just projected what looked like the sky on. eventually, he turns back around to focus on john again, squinting. ] Who are you?

[ and because thomas must ask all the questions he has all at once, on rapid fire: ]

Why are you here? Who's them?

Do not, under any circumstances, tell Lady Mary that she's mad. She is not mad. She is calm and rational and will probably hit you. Hard.

"Advisory to stay indoors? Whatever for? I haven't heard any such warning." How unfortunate. She had high expectations for this man, but it seems that he's frightened and delusional. (She is, too, but she'll never admit it--Crawleys don't get scared.)

"I've not. I cannot find a telephone anywhere." Her cold gaze is briefly interrupted by a flash of worry. Her estate. Her family. George. If she isn't there with him, then her poor baby is truly an orphan. She can't do this to him. She has to get home, and soon.

[personal profile] cold_daughter 2015-07-10 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This man may not be able to dress himself, but at least he can comduct himself with dignity and some degree of humanity. Mary lets herself feel slightly reassured. Slightly.

"Lady Mary Crawley, eldest daughter of the Earl of Grantham," Mary returns. It's important, she thinks, for this man to know who he's dealing with. That way, he won't try to cross her. "You may see these." She hands over the keys, slowly. Her eyes don't leave them--those keys are items of value, and she won't let this Lee take them from her.

[Oh thank god. Finally, someone with an actual brain. This whole place just reeked of like every horror movie ever, yet there were all these people just wandering about looking confused. Free snacks for the zombies, if there were any. Probably were. Or "non-zombie" zombies. Like fungus creatures or infected or whatever they were calling them these days. What a bunch of bullshit. Zombies are zombies.

Regardless, she seems amused if nothing else. Sticking together isn't really here thing, but it's definitely a good idea if you want to Not Die in a horror film. That second bit, however...]

And what if we run into a tribe of freakshows? Being a virgin just gets your ass tossed in a volcano.

[See. That wasn't so hard. Once Ellis lowers his voice, Heavy goes back to eating his sandwich. At least until he pipes up again. What a silly question.]

Am hungry. [Nom.] And place has good view. Why wouldn't Heavy eat here?
ironcurtain: (pic#6649681)

[personal profile] ironcurtain 2015-07-10 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Don't eat the scattergun, Scout. Heavy knows you need more iron in your diet, but it's still a bad idea.

Admittedly it's nice to see Scout again, so much so that he doesn't even say anything in regards to the closeness. In fact he doesn't say anything at all. Gotta chew his food. And chew. And chew. And chew. And swallow-there we go.]

I do now know. [Of course he assumes Scout's speaking about the Administrator. He's from a bit earlier in the timeline.] Have not heard from her or Miss Pauling since I woke up here. Am wondering what kind of mission this is.

[She pushes her chest out slightly and curls her neck back, trilling softly in agreement; yes, sniff. Will find.

Almost as an aside, she finally turns to the blood smeared over the letters and sniffs at that, gives it a curious lick. Not familiar. Good. Not Alpha. She pokes her head into the air and breathes in the currents, getting a sense of population and environment and trying to pick out the distinct strains of the remaining two raptors she knows so well.

There's a subtle tilt of her head towards Charlie to see if the younger raptor had any better luck.]

[Is this kid wearing sunglasses inside a dark building.

I mean he's all about style, truly he is, but...wow. Then again, maybe he's blind. Probably could smell the sandwiches. Unless he's not actually wearing them right now. In which case just forget this entire train of thought.]

Have found food around compound. Should be some more left if you look.

[ a soft snort, almost a laugh, as his face is still buried in the pack. ]

Good that.

[ if he wants to do it from his creepy sniper post, whatever, up to him. eventually, thomas pulls the notepad he'd been writing his map down on earlier, thumbing through it before pulling one of the pages free. what's on it is a traced copy of the map he'd put together, like a blueprint, with things marked all over it - doors, windows, air vents, where fire extingushers are, what room is for what purpose, which doors lock and which don't, plumbing, etc. reaching out, he lays it down on the roof not next to the stranger, but close enough that it's obviously for him, setting a water bottle on top of it.

he hadn't actually just come up to disapprove of his creepy rifle wielding. guy looked like he was trying to get a good view of the compound. thomas figured it'd save him some time. nothing more is said about it, though, and thomas goes back to where he was, though pulls a small scrap of paper free from his pocket. ]

We're on a script. Shanks who put us here left clues. [ the paper he's holding us reads "FIND THE SIX FOR ANSWERS", and you don't leave clues unless you want something found - pushing them in a direction. same as the maze. ] You wake up with anything?

[Powers. Kieren's expression wavers a minute and then he sighs as though he's had this one before. He has.]

People think that. They think we must be psychic - we're dead, so we can communicate with the dead, all that stuff.

[He shakes his head, pushing his hands into the pockets of his jacket.]

But we're just dead. It's not that exciting. It's not exciting at all, really. Sorry.
wipedclean: (i read them all one day)

[personal profile] wipedclean 2015-07-10 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well now. Kid actually wants to be useful instead of just lecturing him. He glances down at the water and the paper and reaches out to take the paper first, looking it over. It's a good map, well drawn. He sets it down in front of him, turns it so it's aligned properly, and nods once before pulling the water closer too, though he doesn't open it yet.

He looks over at the paper, his brow furrowing, then he reaches into a pouch on his belt and pulls out the disposable camera he found when he woke up, holding it up.]

Just this.

[He looks it over again.]

Only one picture taken.

Muh-huh. Mmmrghunuh? [ Did you want to go together or split up?

Pyro's looking to meet new friends and find out where the happy (screaming) people they heard earlier were, but finding their other teammates would probably please Miss Pauling and the Administrator more...
]

[ at the very least, thomas is helpful while he's bitching at people. things that save him from getting punched, tbh. and maybe there's a small ounce of pride he gets from seeing his map approved. cool.

seeing the camera, his brows knit, and he turns himself from the edge of the roof, where he'd been looking out at the compound, to actually face rifle-guy, interest apparently piqued. ]

One? It's film, though, right?

[ he's from 2232, so film cameras are basically antiques, at least as far as his vague memories of How Things Are. what was left in his head when they'd wiped his memory, before going into the Maze. knows what a camera is, how it works, has no solid memory of ever using one before. ]

Know anything about film developing?
wipedclean: (just frame the halves and)

[personal profile] wipedclean 2015-07-10 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, film.

[He barely knows anything about disposable cameras, they were barely on the periphery of the technology he needed to know about as the Asset. He huffs slightly, a little frustrated at the clue he can't access. He puts the camera back in the pouch.]

No, I don't.

[Maybe...maybe? But there are so many other unfamiliar scents that are distracting. Everything is new and not the paddock. Not the trees and the pigs and the treats and the people. Charlie moves a tiny bit closer to Echo. For...safety in numbers, yeah, that's it.

Sneezehuff. Well, she hadn't smelled Echo when she first woke up. Maybe the others are around and they're just...somewhere the air hasn't wafted their scent yet?]

beth greene | the walking dead

[personal profile] schnapp 2015-07-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
weapons storage / around the compound

( this isn't the first time in recent memory that beth has woken up in a strange and unfamiliar place, and she swears that getting kidnapped had better not become a common theme in her life experience, or she'll probably scream. the very first thing that beth does upon waking up is to find herself a weapon. it's just what she's been taught, by rick and countless others. find a weapon, no matter what it is. even if it's just the needle in your iv, or the smallest blunt instrument - anything's better than your bare hands when dealing with walkers.

the cache that she finds seems almost too good to be true. she approaches it with a little apprehension, a small amount of healthy suspicion. she picks a handgun, releasing the magazine to make sure that there are bullets inside, and it happens to be full.

but of course, gunshots attract them. so the next thing she takes is a large hunting knife, like the one she'd had before grady memorial. it's just too bad there's no holster for it in her loose blue hospital scrubs. )

Why'd you leave all this behind?

( she's just. thinking out loud, really.

what happened to you? )

~~~night time
( the zombies in her world don't scream. they might moan, but it's always at the same unsettling monotone. and they can keep it up for hours. the sound of it is enough to drive anyone crazy.
this is worse. this is worse by far. and there's nothing anyone can really do but hide at this point, because going outside is practically suicide. she has a gun, but at this point it's the knife that's probably more valuable. something to kill a stray walker quickly and quietly, before they get noticed.
she's hiding on the second floor of an abandoned house, crouched by a window so she can watch them. clutching her weapons tight and wishing to god there was someone else here, anyone. it'd be better than listening to their screaming alone.
the floorboards behind her creak soon after, and she turns with her hunting knife in hand and her heart in her throat.
because maybe the zombies don't always scream. )
One of the others might.
[ then again, this guy doesn't seem that keen on interacting with the others, so thomas adds in - ]
TURN THAT FROWN UPSIDE DOWN, MR. GRUMPY
[personal profile] minefield 2015-07-10 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh, fucking yes," she pauses for a second, then continues with, "what the fuck?"
The last person she had expected to see here is Chris. But then again, he did always seem to get himself into these situations, and the last she had known— well, Moira didn't actually know. The last mission she had heard of him going on was the one in Africa, and after that Claire had gone quiet about him, and Moira hadn't wanted to upset her by asking and had been quiet on the subject. So she's only half surprised to see him there, because it's kind of insane that they would end up in the same place, but less insane that Chris Redfield, B.S.A.A agent is there.
At least she's in good hands.
No, I'm just... trying to see if it opens.
[His shoulder - his whole body tenses at the voice. Every time he thinks he's alone there's someone else to hide from, and out here that's a difficult thing to achieve.
Ducking his head, he half turns, keeping his face out of sight.]
It hasn't ended, though, has it? July 3rd, 2015 - we're not even there yet.
[Oh, sodding hell. Kieren presses back against the shelves, so at least he can't be seen. There's a pinpoint opening though, and he can make out Grayson through it. Just.]
It's nobody. It's just me.
[He sounds like an ordinary teenager, to all intents and purposes.]
Nothing to be afraid of.
I am. [ An immediate response. Of course, she was speaking Japanese (so she assumed) so there was no reason for her to actually ask... But she shakes her head at Ranmaru's statement; she doesn't mind the familiarity, but if she would rather be called by her last name, Rin won't mind that at all. ]
It's a pleasure to meet you, Rindou-san. [ She's being polite. Awfully polite. ] Regardless of the circumstances, of course.
[ Of course, she takes light steps out of the room she was just in; she had already grabbed whatever seemed of major importance there (which was absolutely nothing- she'd noticed the SD card and red rock, but didn't think that they mattered. Not that she knew what the SD card was for. ]
night time!
[personal profile] minefield 2015-07-10 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ moira's just about ready to scream herself, listening to all these infected walking around the place and making unbearable noises, and if she hadn't wanted to be careful about how close they were getting, she would have crouched somewhere and plugged her ears just to block out the noises. but then, she isn't that bad at being careful.
she doesn't even dare to put on her flash light until she's inside of a ditched house and, hopefully, safely away from the sights of any infected that may be close. the top floor appears to be the safest bet, and she slowly makes her way up there, careful to avoid anything that might make too much noise.
whether or not they have hearing that good is anyone's guess, but she doesn't want to risk it.
so, of course, when her flash light goes past someone's face, she almost lets out a noise herself, before she quickly muffles it with her sleeve, crowbar held up in front of her in a pathetic attempt at defence and various guns tucked away in various places, useless to her now.
it takes her a second to realise it's not an infected. ]
Fuck, shit— don't stab me or anything. I'm not going to hurt you. [ she pauses briefly, then speaks again, slightly more suspicious. ] Not unless you're gonna stab me anyway, that is.
[Again, surprisingly helpful. He's not entirely sure what to do with it. HYDRA provided assistance, of course, but that was different. He was their Asset. He worked with a unit for a common goal. This kid's a complete stranger. Why is he helping?
He just nods, because that's the only way he can think to respond.
He reaches for the water and opens it, taking a drink as he looks back out at the compound.]
